![]() ![]() If the video isn't instructional enough for you, KCET has a full step-by-step recipe here. (Honestly, we'd spread this sauce over everything if we could.) And it looks like an easy one where you just need garlic cloves, salt, sunflower oil, fresh lemon juice and a food processor. KCET recently released one of those fun, short cooking videos that delves into how to make the creamy, garlic sauce (aka toum) that you might find goes well with meats like kebabs, pita and vegetables. Now, you won't have to shamefully ask for more because you can make your own tub of the addictive fluffy sauce. If you're anything like us, you probably ask for an extra order of garlic sauce whenever you order chicken shawarma from the likes of Lebanese and Armenian restaurants like Zankou Chicken. Posted by KCET on Friday, January 8, 2016 Things are looking up, culinary-wise of the SCV.Making Lebanese garlic sauce (toum)If you've been to Zankou Chicken or one of the many other Lebanese and Armenian restaurants in Los Angeles, you're likely familiar with this fluffy, creamy garlic sauce. Since then, Zankou has opened locations in Glendale, Van Nuys, Anaheim, Pasadena, Toluca Lake, West Hollywood, West LA, Burbank with other restaurants in Tarzana, Granada Hills, Montebello (different sides of the family own various outlets).ĭespite its history, we’re just happy that Zankou has chosen the SCV as its next outpost. While the company opened its first location in the early ’80s (on Sunset in East Hollywood), the fast-casual chain’s growth was tempered by a family dispute that ultimately led to tragedy. Oh and so are the falafel, the kebobs, hummus, tabbouleh and…we could go on and on. What’s so special about Zankou? Well to start, the restaurant’s rotisserie chicken or chicken tarna (flame-broiled) wraps-both come with the famous garlic spread-are some of our favs. ![]() The company is aiming to open the location on the corner of McBean and Magic Mountain parkways in December or January. Zankou Chicken-the popular L.A.-based Armenian-Mediterranean chicken chain-is finally coming to the SCV. This sign made my heart swell and jump for joy: While driving to Target in Valencia last week, this SCVFoodie noticed a sign strung across the building that now sits on the site of the old Pier 1 Imports. That headline might be a little misleading, but only a little. It has a definitive garlic taste and flavor WITHOUT the bite of raw garlic. We don’t know if we were handed someone else’s lunch, or if they were Zankou’s way of making up for the wait. The Garlic sauce has a thick consistency like mash potatoes. In the bag were a couple falafel that we didn’t order. The chicken was tasty, but they got the order wrong, too. There were no numbers written on the orders, making it difficult for the workers to match to receipts.Īfter standing at the counter for another 15 minutes, this writer’s order arrived: A chicken wrap. Two other customers complained that they were handed the wrong order. Another person said that he had been waiting for 25 minutes for his food, and the expediter said that they were really behind. One employee told one woman that they probably just paged the wrong number, but we were among about 10 people waiting, so all of us couldn’t have been paged incorrectly. All had been notified that their orders were ready for pick up. When we got to the pickup station, we noticed a crowd of people waiting, too. We waited approximately 10 minutes for the buzzer to notify us that our orders were ready. Our orders were taken quickly despite the line, but unfortunately, Zankou still needs to work out a lot of kinks in expediting orders. We partook in a late Friday lunch around 1:30-2 p.m., and as expected, it was a zoo. Place raw garlic in a heavy duty blender with the salt and lemon juice. SCVFoodie, however, broke one of its cardinal rules when we hit up Zankou during its first week of business. Peel the potatoes and boil in water until soft. We’ve been anxiously awaiting the fast-casual restaurant’s opening for its rotisserie chicken dishes, falafel and most importantly, the garlic sauce that’s so good that we don’t mind that it lingers on the tongue for hours on end. Zankou Chicken finally opened its Valencia location (on the corner of McBean and Magic Mountain Parkway) on Monday, March 26. My homemade copycat Zankou Chicken Garlic Sauce is truly obsession-worthy I have loved zankouchicken and their famous toum-inspired sauce for years.
